Liam Lynch Ceremony
By DEIRDRE McGRATH
HISTORIAN and archivist, Sean O'Mahoney, will deliver an oration at the
annual Liam Lynch commemoration in the Knockmealdown Mountains where the
County Limerick man and former chief-of-staff of the IRA was killed during
the Civil War in 1923.
The oration takes place on Sunday, July 30, at 3pm beside the Liam
Lynch memorial, a 60-foot high round tower surrounded by four bronze
wolfhounds at Goatenbridge.
The round tower was unveiled in memory of the anti-Treaty Anglesboro
man in 1935 and it is estimated that 15,000 people attended the ceremony.
Mr O'Mahoney owns a priceless collection of manuscripts, books and
press cuttings which he has loaned to historians such as Tim Pat Coogan
and Uinseann Mac Eoin.
His latest work is Three Murders in Dublin Castle, and outlines the
murders of Connor Clune, Peader Clancy and Dick McKee in 1920.
Ballad singer Ann Mulqueen will perform a selection of songs and an
will be played on the pipes by Mattie Weldon.
The commemoration is supported by members of the National Graves
Association, some of whom will be present.
