James Francis Durham

He married in 1908, to Jane Green of Bishop Auckland, whose brother was a Quartermaster Sergeant with The Durham Light Infantry stationed at Fermoy.

Jimmy Durham died from pneumonia, on the 8th August 1910, while stationed at Fermoy, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Shortly afterwards, his daughter Frances, was born. She lived in Bishop Auckland until her death in 1998.

Jimmy was buried with full military honours in the Military Cemetery, which adjoins the Famine Graveyard in Fermoy. The floral tributes and large gathering of mourners at his burial were tributes to his popularity, among his fellow soldiers and also among the people of Fermoy. Some of Jimmy’s old comrades, who knew him in Egypt, travelled from England to show their respects.

The Inscription on his Headstone is as follows;

Bandsman James Francis Durham.
The 2nd Batt. Durham Light Infantry, who died on August 8th 1910.
