Adair Old School - Oliver Plunkett Hill

Rev. William Adair was a personal friend of John Anderson and like him, a Scotsman. He died at Fermoy in 1814 and was buried in the cemetery to the east of the Old Barracks. A plain altar tomb, close to the north boundry wall, was identified by Niall Brunicardi some years ago, although the inscription was almost obliterated by then.

Dr. W. Adair was licensed to become a schoolmaster at Fermoy on the 17th.November 1804. The first Adair School, on West Quay at the corner of Abbey Street, was a large two story slated building with accomodation for the Master on the upper floor.

In latter years this building was occupied as Noble's bicycle workshop, then passed into the occupation of Mr. Michael Slattery, and was demolished in 1975 to make way for extending the Grand Hotel.

The School continued as the Adair School in Barrack Hill (1836 ) until a new Adair School was opened at Greenhill, above the Presbyterian Church, in 1976.
